The United Nations Universal Children’s Day was established in 1954 and is celebrated on November 20th each year to promote international togetherness, awareness among children worldwide, and improving children’s welfare.
November 20th is an important date as it is the date in 1959 when the UN General Assembly adopted the Declaration of the Rights of the Child. It is also the date in 1989 when the UN General assembly adopted the Convention on the Rights of the Child.
One Voice Initiative decided to take part in the commemoration by visiting the Government College, Owerri.
We arrived at the school by 7:30am and met with the school management. We were 3 in attendance, you don’t need large numbers to make impact in the world.
We got to address the Junior Secondary School students as they were our primary target for the outreach.
We spoke to the kids about Child Rights, it was indeed an enlightening one and to top it off, we gave gifts and prizes to students who either asked questions pr answered correctly.
The school management was highly impressed and suggested we should be coming around during their moral instruction time to enlighten the students.
