Since 2008, World Sickle Cell Awareness Day has been held annually, in order to help increase public knowledge and raise awareness of Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) and the struggles sufferers and their families go through.
The date was chosen to commemorate the day on which a resolution was officially adopted by the General Assembly of the United Nations, recognizing SCD as a public health concern.
The Pharmacostory Health Awareness Initiative in partnership with One Voice Initiative for Women and Children Emancipation (OVIWCE), Ibadan Region organized an Outreach to University College Hospital, Ibadan to commemorate the Day on the 20th of June, 2017.
Interested Volunteers came from far and wide. Notable Volunteers were student from University of Ibadan, Polytechnic Ibadan, National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) and other various institutions.
We commenced the project by first pre-visiting and soliciting for donations. Our volunteers visited hospitals and pharmacies across Oyo State. It wasn’t easy, but we are really grateful to all the kindhearted people who donated and helped, we say a big Thank You!
It was a beautiful morning on the 20th of June, 2017. It was the day of the event, organizers, members and volunteers set out to visit the Sickle cell Warriors at University College Hospital, Ibadan, Oyo State. It was great as not only did we visit and shared gifts, we educated and orientated these Sickle Cell Warriors and it was indeed a great session.
The day closed and we were able to do what we do best, putting smiles on other people’s faces, we can’t wait to do it again next year 2018.
